In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister highlighted the historical importance of August 7, 1905, the day the Swadeshi Movement began during the freedom struggle against British rule. He said the occasion reflects the spirit of self-reliance and encourages people to support Indian artisans.
PM Modi appealed to young people to purchase handloom products and share their experiences through social media, including “Get Ready With Me” videos showcasing traditional handloom clothing.
He said celebrating National Handloom Day is a way of recognising the efforts of weavers and supporting families involved in preserving India’s rich textile heritage.
The Prime Minister also emphasised that handloom products represent the skill, dedication and cultural identity of artisans across the country. He said choosing handloom items supports the “Vocal for Local” initiative and contributes to the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
National Handloom Day is observed every year on August 7 to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement and highlight the contribution of India’s handloom sector.
