Expectations from Consolidated Union Budget 2024-25

As the new government heralds into scripting new chapter by coming into power for the third term, under the leadership of Hon’ble, Prime Minister, the entire focus is on Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman who will outline the government’s vision for the next five years.

Judiciary plays a crucial role in India’s ambition of ‘Shreshtha & Viksit Bharat @2047’, which aims to make the country a developed nation by 2047, the 100th year of its Independence and another version of Jan Vishwas Bill might be needed to make a more reliable judicial framework.

Here’s a brief outline of the expectations from the Law and Judiciary field for the upcoming union budget:

1. Increased Funding for Judiciary Infrastructure:
– Enhanced allocation for the construction and modernization of court buildings and facilities.
– Investment in digital infrastructure to promote e-courts and virtual hearings.

2. Faster Judicial Appointments:
– Provisions for speeding up the appointment process of judges to reduce the backlog of cases.
– Increased budget for training and development programs for newly appointed judges.

3. Legal Aid and Support Services:
– More funds for legal aid services to ensure access to justice for marginalized and economically weaker sections.
– Expansion of support services for victims of crimes, especially for women and children.

4. Technological Advancements:
– Budgetary support for the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other technologies to streamline case management and legal research.
– Investment in cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive judicial data.

5. Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Mechanisms:
– Encouraging budget allocations for promoting mediation, arbitration, and other ADR methods to reduce the burden on traditional courts.

6. Capacity Building and Training Programs:
– Increased funding for continuous education and training programs for judges, lawyers, and other legal professionals.
– Establishing centers of excellence for research and development in legal studies and judicial practices.

7. Focus on Legal Reforms:
– Allocations for comprehensive legal reforms to make laws more contemporary and efficient.
– Emphasis on reforms related to commercial courts, insolvency and bankruptcy code, and other critical areas.

8. Support for Legal Awareness Campaigns:
– Budget for nationwide campaigns to increase legal literacy and awareness among the general public.
