NMIMS School of Economics and Virginia Tech’s Dual Degree Programme Integrates new age courses with foundational economic courses

Mumbai, 6th March 2024: The field of economics is constantly evolving. Catering to the industry’s new-age demands, the NMIMS Sarla Anil Modi School of Economics (SAMSOE) and Virginia Tech University (VT), USA, have collaborated to offer a unique 2-year Dual Degree Programme in Economics.

 Admissions are now open for the Master of Science (Economics) dual-degree programme that spans two years, with one year at NMIMS and the next year at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA, USA. After the successful completion of the dual degree programme, students will receive an M.Sc. Economics degree from SAMSOE and an M.A. in Economics degree from Virginia Tech.

 The distinctive programme provides a deep understanding of economics and blends it with analytical disciplines. Students receive foundational education in Economics through the M.Sc. in Economics degree at SAMSOE. Subjects such as Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics and International Economics prepare a strong base for economics aspirants. Subsequently, students will have the opportunity to pursue advanced courses such as Big Data Economics, Computational Finance, Behavioural Economics, and Managerial Economics at Virginia Tech. Together, both courses will help lay a solid foundation for a Ph.D. in Economics. Moreover, qualified students will have access to the full range of Ph.D. courses in Economics offered at Virginia Tech.

 The MA Economics degree at Virginia Tech is a STEM-certified programme, which will allow international students to receive Optional Practical Training for three years after the
completion of their degree.

 Selection process:
● The students would be selected based on an admission test and personal interview jointly conducted by NMIMS & VT.
● The students at NMIMS have to complete all the first-year courses in both Semesters with a minimum CGPA of 3 on a scale of 4.
● The students who do not get the minimum CGPA will not qualify for the dual degree programme.
● These students will have the option of continuing in the second year at NMIMS and getting the M.Sc. Economics degree from NMIMS.
● Those students who qualify to go to VT will have to ensure that they do the necessary paperwork and procure the student VISA. The students will be wholly responsible for the procurement of the VISA.

 Eligibility criteria:
1. The candidate must be a graduate in any stream from a recognized University and should have obtained a minimum of 50% aggregate marks.
2. Candidate must have passed Mathematics or Statistics as a course in their 10+2 or equivalent examination AND at the Graduation level.
