Swiggy’s Food on Train records 12x growth in 2 years: Network expands to 201 stations

August 27, 2026: Swiggy , India’s pioneering on-demand convenience platform, today announced that its Food on Train offering has grown 12x in last 2 years (August 2024 to August 2026) with adoption in tier-2 and 3 markets growing twice as fast as in the metro cities. In addition to this, Swiggy has also expanded its Food on Train offering to 201 stations, up from 66 in 2024.

Swiggy also launched two new product features designed to make transit ordering faster and more intuitive. The first one is ‘Search by Train’ that allows users to bypass traditional restaurant filtering by simply typing their Train Number or Train Name to instantly view food options mapped to their specific route and schedule. Also, the newly launched ‘99 Store Widget’ is a dedicated hub on the app that lets passengers quickly navigate to budget-friendly meal options, making affordable dining effortless on long journeys.

Swiggy also shared interesting trends around the evolving food habits of train travelers. In just over a year, passengers have switched from fast food and carbonated drinks to healthier, refreshing options. Compared to last year, travelers are preferring traditional and refreshing drinks like lassi (+60%), buttermilk (+40%), and mojitos (+90%), while orders for standard fizzy drinks have dropped considerably. Food on trains is seeing a return to traditional and regional comfort foods, with full meals like Thali’s comprising over 65% of all train orders. Additionally, orders for sweets have seen an exponential increase (+110%), led by rasgullas.

Speaking on the growth of the Food on Train offering, Sidharth Bhakoo, Chief Business Officer, Swiggy Food Marketplace said, “Over the years, online food delivery has evolved from being used  during special occasions to serving a wider set of use cases. We are seeing consumers increasingly embrace convenience across diverse moments. Food on Train is a strong example of how technology is creating entirely new consumption occasions, with travellers not only planning meals around their journeys, but also using the opportunity to discover regional favourites along the way. Food on Train has seen multifold growth since its launch in March 2024 and has witnessed widespread adoption across various consumer cohorts, including Gen Z. We are also seeing a huge opportunity for our affordability offerings and have launched a special widget for 99 Store. As consumer behaviours evolve, the opportunity for the food ecosystem lies in making every consumption moment more convenient, accessible and relevant to the consumer.”

The new stations that have been added to the network include Kolhapur, Wardha, Shahdol, Kakinada, Bharatpur, Chittoor, Thanjavur, Raigarh, Jamnagar, Indore & Tundla. Additionally, travelers are using their train journeys as regional culinary tours, ordering iconic local specialties right from their berths. This trend can be seen in station-level sales data: Pyaz Kachori is the single top-selling item at Jaipur Junction, while Poha ranks as a top-10 breakfast staple in Bhopal. Local Biryani variants dominate station orders in the South and Central stations and also lead sales in Lucknow alongside famous Tunday Galouti Kebabs. Interestingly, Haldiram’s thalis lead in Nagpur and local seafood thalis are amongst  top orders at Madgaon in Goa.
