J&K Artisans and Weavers Get INR 14.71 Crore in Loans, Giving Traditional Crafts a Boost

Srinagar, Oct 9: Artisans and weavers in Jammu and Kashmir have received loans worth ₹14.71 crore during the first two quarters of the current financial year, providing financial support to traditional craft workers and helping them sustain their livelihoods.

The financial assistance is expected to help artisans meet day-to-day business expenses, purchase raw materials, improve production and expand their small enterprises. Access to timely credit is particularly important for craft workers, many of whom depend on seasonal demand and orders from domestic and international markets.

Jammu and Kashmir is renowned for its rich handicraft and handloom traditions, including Pashmina shawls, handmade carpets, papier-mâché products, embroidered textiles and other handcrafted goods. These activities preserve the region’s cultural heritage while supporting employment and income for thousands of families.

For many artisans, limited access to finance can make it difficult to buy materials in bulk, upgrade tools or fulfil larger orders. Institutional lending can help address these challenges by providing working capital and creating opportunities for small craft-based businesses to strengthen their operations.

The sector also has considerable potential to benefit from wider market access, improved product design, digital platforms and stronger branding. Connecting traditional crafts with changing consumer preferences can help artisans reach new customers and improve their earning prospects.

Continued financial support, skill development and better marketing opportunities will be important to ensure that the benefits reach craft workers across the region. By combining access to credit with market development, Jammu and Kashmir can strengthen its traditional craft economy while creating more sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The ₹14.71 crore in loans marks an important source of financial support for artisans and weavers, reinforcing the role of traditional crafts in preserving cultural identity and supporting local economic activity.
