Consumer Durables Brace for October Price Hike as Input Costs Rise

New Delhi, Sep 28: Air conditioners, LED televisions, washing machines, refrigerators and other consumer durable products are set to become more expensive from October 1, as manufacturers prepare to pass on a part of the increase in input and operating costs.

According to industry executives cited in a report, several leading appliance and consumer electronics companies are planning price increases of around 5-8 per cent across selected products ahead of the peak festive shopping season. The latest move would mark the third round of price increases for the industry in 2026.

The pricing pressure is being driven by higher costs of key raw materials such as copper, steel and aluminium, along with crude-linked inputs and logistics expenses. Currency fluctuations amid geopolitical developments in West Asia have also added to the cost burden for manufacturers.

Companies are facing the challenge of absorbing higher production costs while maintaining demand during one of the most important sales periods of the year.

Festive demand remains in focus

The price increases come just ahead of Dussehra and Diwali, when consumer spending on electronics and household appliances typically picks up. Manufacturers and retailers are therefore closely watching how consumers respond to higher prices.

Some consumers could advance purchases before the revised prices fully reach the market, while existing dealer inventory purchased at earlier prices may allow retailers to continue offering selected products at older rates for a limited period.

Manufacturers balance margins and sales

The latest price revisions reflect the pressure on companies to protect margins as commodity and production costs rise. However, manufacturers also need to ensure that higher prices do not significantly affect sales volumes during the festive period.

The impact is likely to vary across product categories. Premium products may have greater pricing flexibility, while mass-market appliances could face stronger price sensitivity among consumers.

Wider impact on consumer durables

The development highlights the close link between global commodity markets and India’s consumer electronics industry. Changes in copper, steel, aluminium and crude prices can directly influence manufacturing costs, while currency movements can affect the cost of imported components.

For consumers, the October price revision could increase the overall cost of major household purchases. For manufacturers and retailers, the festive season will be an important test of whether strong demand can continue despite higher prices.

The industry will continue to monitor commodity prices, currency movements and consumer demand before deciding on further pricing changes in the coming months.
