Career Outcomes, Not Rankings: Indian Students Are Charting a Bolder Path Abroad

Sep 09: upGrad, one of Asia’s largest integrated skilling and lifelong learning majors has launched the latest edition of their Transnational Education Report 2026. This report reveals a major shift in the way Indian students are approaching International Education. The report shows the emergence of what it calls as the “Era of Strategic Pivot” wherein employability, career outcomes and affordability are now the key drivers of study abroad decisions.

upGrad, based on insights from 53,800 counselled aspirants between January 2025 and June 2026, has analysed that students in India are significantly becoming more outcome-focused and result oriented and are evaluating destinations based on ROI, employment opportunities, and long-term career outcomes over institutional prominence.

While traditional destinations like the USA, UK, Canada and Australia remain significant, students have been prompted to explore other destinations across Europe due to rigid immigration policies and rising costs. Students are now preferring Germany, Finland, Spain and France due to their affordability, industry alignment, and stronger employment-linked pathways.

The respondent base was mainly made up of aspirants early in their professional journeys and fresh graduates with 65.8% freshers, while nearly 60% of aspirants hail from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. More than 73% of aspirants expressed interest in pursuing master’s degrees abroad.

Key findings include:

• Career outcomes now outweigh university prestige. Nearly half of Indian aspirants cite better job opportunities as their primary reason for studying abroad, ahead of quality of education, permanent residency or lifestyle aspirations. This marks a clear shift towards outcome-led decision making.

• Europe is emerging as the biggest beneficiary of changing global policies. As traditional destinations have become more restrictive, countries such as Germany, France, Spain and Finland are witnessing growing interest due to their affordability, industry integration and clearer post-education pathways.

• Germany has emerged as the leading destination among upGrad Study Abroad learners, accounting for 51% of enrolments during the study period highlighting the growing significance of value-driven destinations over traditional favourites.

• Affordability is reshaping international education. Seven in ten aspirants now plan to study abroad with a total education budget below ₹30 lakh, signalling an increase in demand for cost-effective global education pathways.

• AI is influencing programme selection like never before. Half of upGrad’s Pathways portfolio now comprises AI-integrated or AI-first programmes, while demand for STEM education has grown 18% year-on-year as students increasingly seek future-ready skills.

• Women continue to strengthen their presence in STEM. Women account for nearly 39% of upGrad’s STEM enrolments, reflecting a steady rise in participation in technology-focused international education.

Commenting on the findings, Praneet Singh, Vice President, University Partnerships, upGrad Study Abroad, said:

“The study abroad landscape is undergoing a significant shift, with Indian students increasingly prioritising career outcomes, democratized modalities and immediate ROI. Europe’s growing appeal reflects this evolving mindset, as learners seek destinations that combine quality education with strong workforce-integration opportunities.
