Noida, Mar 24: In a remarkable display of clinical expertise and surgical precision, doctors at Medanta Hospital, Noida, successfully performed a complex kidney transplant on a 47–year–old patient, Mr. Sumit Tyagi, who had previously lost his right leg in a road traffic accident. The case was particularly challenging due to his medical history and anatomical limitations, making the transplant procedure highly intricate. Today, Mr. Tyagi is leading a healthy life, free from the complications of chronic kidney disease.

Mr. Tyagi’s life had been marked by adversity since 2003, when a tragic road traffic accident led to the amputation of his right leg. Despite the physical and emotional challenges, he adapted to his circumstances and continued with his daily life. However, over the past 4–5 years, he was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, which progressively worsened. As his condition deteriorated, doctors advised that a kidney transplant was the only viable option for survival. In a heartwarming gesture, his 62-year–old mother stepped forward to donate her kidney.

Typically, the donor kidney is implanted in the right lower abdomen and connected to blood vessels supplying the right leg. However, in this case, that approach was not feasible. We had to carefully plan and execute the transplant on the left side, ensuring that the kidney was connected to the vessels supplying his only leg. Such cases demand meticulous surgical precision and thorough pre-operative planning to ensure optimal outcomes.”
Even though all compatibility parameters matched for the transplant, the surgical complexity did not end there. Another significant challenge was related to the donor kidney itself, which had double renal arteries and double ureters. This anatomical variation required the surgical team — led by Dr. Manoj Kumar Singhal, Director, Nephrology & Kidney Transplant, Medanta Hospital Noida, along with Dr. Rahul Gupta, Associate Director, Urology and Dr. Abhinav Veerwal, Senior Consultant, Urology — to connect both arteries precisely to ensure proper blood flow and to carefully attach both ureters to the urinary bladder so that the transplanted kidney could function effectively. The procedure required exceptional skill, coordination, and attention to detail to ensure that all connections were secure and functional.
