Sep 18: Assam is increasingly looking at bamboo not just as a traditional resource but as a source of new livelihoods, entrepreneurship and sustainable economic growth. On World Bamboo Day, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the growing role of bamboo in creating opportunities for people across the state.
Describing bamboo as the “green gold” of Assam, Sarma said the versatile plant is finding applications ranging from everyday products to emerging industries and is opening new avenues for entrepreneurship.
“From everyday products to new industries, Assam’s bamboo is creating new opportunities for our people,” the Chief Minister said in a social media post marking World Bamboo Day.
The growing bamboo economy has the potential to benefit local communities by creating opportunities across cultivation, processing, manufacturing, handicrafts and value-added products. For rural entrepreneurs and small businesses, bamboo can provide a locally available raw material that can be converted into a wide range of consumer and industrial products.
Bamboo Supporting Rural Livelihoods
Bamboo-based activities can generate employment at several stages of the value chain, from cultivation and harvesting to processing, product manufacturing, packaging and marketing. This creates opportunities not only for established businesses but also for small entrepreneurs and artisans.
For communities in rural and semi-urban areas, a stronger bamboo economy can provide additional livelihood options while encouraging the use of locally available resources.
