A Greener Tomorrow: JSW’s INR 40,000 Cr EV Project to Power Odisha’s Future

Cuttack, Sept 20: A new chapter is unfolding in Odisha’s industrial journey — one that’s not only about growth, but also about a cleaner, greener future. JSW Energy, led by renowned industrialist Sajjan Jindal, is bringing a massive Electric Vehicle (EV) and battery manufacturing project to Baranga, near Cuttack — a move that could reshape the region’s economy and spark thousands of opportunities for local people.

This ambitious project, worth a staggering ₹40,000 crore, aims to set up an integrated EV complex that will manufacture electric vehicles, lithium-ion battery cells, and also house a copper smelter — a crucial component in EV and battery production.

From Farmland to Future Hub

The project needs 1,420 acres of land to come to life. So far, 871 acres have been allocated by the state, with land acquisition underway for the rest. Much of this land is in four villages under Baranga Tehsil, transforming what was once simple farmland into the heart of Odisha’s clean energy revolution.

“This project is not just about infrastructure or investment — it’s about building a future that our children can be proud of,” said a senior official from the Industries Department.

Thousands of Lives Set to Change

Once operational, the project is expected to create thousands of jobs — from factory floor workers and engineers to logistics staff and local service providers. For many families in and around Cuttack, it means stability, income, and new dreams.

“I never imagined something like this could come so close to our village,” says Ranjan, a 22-year-old diploma holder from Baranga. “If I can work here, I won’t have to leave Odisha to find a job.”

The state government is working closely with JSW to ensure that basic infrastructure — like power, water, and road connectivity — is ready in time to support the project’s execution.

Odisha’s EV Leap: More Than Just Business

This project goes far beyond industrial growth. It represents Odisha’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and future-facing industries. With global attention shifting toward electric mobility, Odisha is stepping up to be part of that story.

By reducing reliance on imported batteries and cars, India strengthens its position in the global EV supply chain — and Odisha, with this project, becomes a key player.

Part of a Bigger Vision

Industries Minister Pratap Keshari Deb shared that this is just one of 32 new industrial proposals approved for the Cuttack region. From cement to tech and food processing, the investment pipeline is strong — and it’s only growing.

“This isn’t just about factories. It’s about reshaping Cuttack and Odisha into a hub of future industries — a place where our youth can thrive without having to leave their homes,” Minister Deb said during a recent Assembly session.

A Promise of Progress, A Future with Purpose

For Odisha, the JSW EV project is more than just a business deal. It’s a promise — to its people, to its environment, and to its future. A promise that growth and sustainability can go hand in hand. A promise that Odisha is ready for the industries of tomorrow, today.
